GBENGA ADEBOYE, the Pioneer Founder of comedy - M.O AKANDE

EARLY LIFE
As a child, Gbenga was precocious often chastised ‘forwardness’. Adeboye was one of those children who didn’t realize when their mothers gave them the ‘eye’ to shut them up in the presence of guests. Young Gbenga let it rip without filter: he said any and everything his eyes saw. By the time he was a secondary school student at Oranmiyan Memorial Grammar School Ile-Ife, he had gained a reputation for being the school clown: the one who could bail himself out of trouble (that he mostly put in himself into!) by telling jokes. But this was in the 70’s: nobody ever made a living by forming and telling faabu. Soon he was sent off to the big city of Lagos to find a proper means of livelihood. He got a job with the Nigerian Airports Authority as commercial attache. His job was picking up foreigners at the airport, holding placards and announcing their names from a small notepad.

CAREER
Gbenga was a versatile entertainer. An orator, comedian, master of ceremony, broadcaster and songwriter. His programmme on Lagos State Broadcasting Corporation gave him the pseudo-name Funwontan. Some of his songs did not go the usual ‘words and melody’ way, as he carved his own style of singing.

He released six albums between 1990 and 2003. His method was composing songs on one side and crafting comedy on the other. He admonished via songs like Iya (Mother) and Yoruba Ronu and just cracked fans up on tracks like London Yabbis. Who can ever forget his characters Itu Baba Ita and Laisi Abesunpinle. He was a ventriloquist who could mimic nearly twenty voices during a set. And all of these he did effortlessly. He combined his radio career with comedy, often teasing his fans by delivering strings of jokes that he promised to complete on his next album.

During his lifetime and at his death, he was described as a generous and carefree person. Alaye mi Gbengulo, as he was called by fans, was a mentor to many. Some of those who hold him in high esteem are: Abbey Fagboro, Ereke ni Soobu, Bashiru Adisa better known as Baba Gboin. Fathia Balogun, Nollywood actress hit limelight when she featured as a dancer in one of his music videos.

In her album titled ‘Omo Majemu’ translated as ‘Convenant Child’, Seun Adeboye, his sister, narrated how he lived before he hit limelight and how Wednesday was special in his life. According to her, Gbenga Adeboye was born on Wednesday, September 30, 1959; began his education on Wednesday, had his first trip to America on Wednesday, and his first radio programme on a Wednesday.

At birth, he was known as Elijah Oluwagbemiga Adeboye, but as at the time of his death, it became difficult to keep track of his names. The names were as a result of his exploits in humour and music. Some of the names are Funwontan, Oduology, Alhaji Pastor Oluwo, Abefe, Jengbetiele, Itu baba Ita, and Alaye mi Gbengulo. He is the pioneer founder of FIBAN in Nigeria, Freelance and Independent Broadcasters' Association of Nigeria. An independent cooperate body of qualified broadcasters. He also claimed to have been sent back to the earth by God to complete his unfinished business and was instructed to be buried with his Bible and hymn book.

PERSONAL LIFE
In 2002, it was reported that Alaye Mi Gbengulo (one of his numerous monikers) was suffering from kidney related illnesses. For a while he and his associates denied it but his protracted absence from his radio shows couldn’t be spun any other way: the man was indeed ill. He pulled through, emaciated and all but pull through he did. On the last day of April 2003, Gbenga Adeboye passed away in a Lagos hospital.  His funeral was almost a state event: after being laid in state at the premises of Lagos Televison, a mass of fans and well wishes followed his body to its final resting place in Akute, Ogun State. He was survived by wife, Omolara Gbenga Adeboye, and children including; Damilola Gbenga Adeboye  (daughter) and Oladipupo Gbenga Adeboye? (son).

HIS MIRACULOUS RESURRECTION AND DEATH

Before Gbenga finally died on April 30, 2003, he made certain controversial statements in a recorded tape. He said that God had called him to glory at a point in his life. According to him, the purpose of his death at that time was to be shown several mysterious things by the Divine.
Gbenga claimed that he was later sent back to earth by God because he had to complete an unfinished assignment. As if he knew about his imminent death, the entertainer requested that he be buried with the Bible and a hymn book.

GODFATHER IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY
Apart from his many achievements, Gbenga Adeboye also impacted the lives of many entertainers. He was not a lone ranger, rather, he embraced many people and made them as great as he was. For one, it is impossible to mention the person of Yinka Ayefele without talking about Adeboye.
Also, the likes of Abbey Fagboro, Ereke ni Soobu, Bashiru Adisa better known as Baba Gboin reverence Alaye Mi Gbengulo for the role he played in their career. Even more, Nollywood actress Fathia Balogun came to the spotlight only after she featured as a dancer in one of his music videos.

In Summary
Needless to say, when Gbenga Adeboye was alive, his happiness was everyone's happiness. He made big problems into teeny-weeny jokes so that when these little jokes are laughed over, these challenges and mountain-like distresses disappear all together. Gbenga Adeboye died in 2003, at the age of 44, and since then, the entertainment industry in Nigeria has been echoing with the sound of his laughter and the rhythm of his care free, happy attitude. Enough poetry. There is no doubt that many Nigerians are well acquainted with Gbenga Adeboye, the famous master of oduology and humour merchant that was at the forefront of comedy and entertainment in his days.

TOPE ALABI, An example of NEVER-GIVE-UP

Tope Alabi, also known as Ore ti o common, and as Agbo Jesu (born 27 October 1970), is a Nigerian gospel singer, film music composer and actress.Alabi was formerly a member of the Jesters International comedy group. She later worked with other popular travelling and stage theater groups in both Ibadan and Lagos. She made films in the Yoruba film genre of Nigeria. Alabi later metamorphosed into gospel music after she became a born-again Christian.
TOPE ALABI BACKGROUND
Patricia Temitope Alabi was born on 27th October, 1970 as the only daughter. She was born to Pa Joseph Akinyele and Madam Agnes Kehinde. Tope hails from Yewa, Imeko of ogun State, and she grew up in an environment with strict discipline from her mother. She attended Oba Akinyele Memorial High School and obtained her West Africa School Certificate (WAEC) in 1986. Then, she proceeded to the Polytechnic Ibadan where she studied Mass Communication and graduated in 1990.

Tope Alabi Early Career
With the initial dream of becoming a star actress, Tope joined a theatre group in secondary school. She joined the Jesters International group in 1983 and was acting with Papilolo and Aderupoko. She also worked with Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Ibadan between 1990 & 1991. Later, she worked with Centre-spread Advertising Limited, Lagos in 1991 – 1992.
Later, she got back into acting and joined Alade Aromire Theatre group in 1994. In Alade Aromire Theatre group, Tope discovered her talent in singing and making soundtracks for movie productions. Today, she is referred to as the pacesetter of soundtracks in Yoruba home video industry.

PERSONAL LIFE
Tope is married to Soji Alabi who is also her manager and producer. They are blessed with children. Her hobbies also include; watching movies, watching table tennis, going on vacation e.t.c.

MUSIC CAREER
Tope came to limelight in 2000 after releasing the debut album Oore ti O Common. This album brought her fame and also earned her the moniker Oore ti o Common and Agbo Jesu. Prior to that, she had released two albums – Ikoko Dudu and Baba Iwo la k’epe. However, she did Oore ti o common (uncommon favour) first as a cover of a makossa hit before changing it to a gospel song in 2000. She also did some soundtracks such as Adake dajo, Angeli Mi and many more.
Tope has released eleven albums. The latest album, The Spirit of Light, 2019 was done in conjunction with the popular songwriter and photographer TY Bello. According to Tope, the album was not planned, the duo just wanted to worship God, but things turned around and it became an album. For instance, one of the tracks, Logan ti o de broke the internet within few hours of release.

TOPE ALABI GOSPEL VIBES
Tope Alabi and her husband Soji runs a music label, Tope Alabi Gospel Vibes. Under this label, they organise event and concert where a lot of people come to worship God. One of the worship concert is the annual Praise The Almighty Concert.
Also, they established the Mardebra Comforter Foundation, a subsidiary of the Gospel Vibes. Through the foundation, Tope and her husband cater for orphans and the less-privileged.

LESSONS FROM THE LIFE OF TOPE ALABI
PREPARATION

1. Before any performance, Tope ensures she adequately prepares. According to her, as a gospel minister, the duration of her prayer depends on what God dictates. “If he says I should pray for ten hours before a ministration, I would gladly heed his instruction.”

2. Sensitivity to one’s environment is one of Tope Alabi’s strengths. Overtime, she discovered the best time God talks to her is in her moment of quietness, or sometimes on stage during ministry. As a result, she never goes to relax without her pen and paper right beside her.

3. At some point, Tope was striving to be heard. While acting, she’d spend time on location and not appear in a single movie. When she began to sing too, she had released two albums which didn’t sell. But the moment she released Oore ti o Common, Tope shot to limelight.
Imagine if she gave up. Success does not just happen. Sometimes, you will face rejection and failure. Persevering and not giving up is all you need to wait it out.

NET WORTH
Tope Alabi gained her fortune from Yoruba movie soundtrack production, live concerts and shows, album sales and endorsement deals. Her net worth is $400,000.

THESE 4 REASONS WILL MAKE YOU TO STOP TAKING GARRI

In Nigeria, cassava flakes is a staple food and are made from cassava tubers.

Nicknamed ‘garri’, ‘African cornflakes’, ‘garium sulphate’, ‘garrison’, it is loved by many and taken by a large percentage of the population.

Garri can be in yellow or white colour depending on what type of palm oil was used to fry it.

Consumption of garri is common among the populace of West Africa like Togo, Nigeria, Benin Republic and others. It gained this importance not only because its a cheap and readily available source of food but also a fast food

Garri can be taken on its own by soaking in water and drinking, but it could also be mixed with hot water, and be eaten with soup to give a balanced diet

Eye Defects

Garri is made from cassava which is known to contain hydrocyanic acid. Cyanide in garri, if contained in large quantity can lead to serious eye defects. However, proper, safe, and thorough processing of the garri should reduce the concentration of the acid to a considerate level.

Causes/Aggravates Ulcer

Due to the high levels of cyanide in poorly processed garri, an ulcer can be developed. Cyanide is an organic acid in nature and when it is concentrated in the intestines. it can cause an ulcer or worsen the situation of an ulcer patient.

Weight Gain

Garri is made from cassava which is highly rich in carbohydrate. A cup of garri contains about 360 calories, out of which 99 percent is carbohydrate. Excessive consumption of garri can increase the blood sugar level in diabetic patients and in turn, this causes weight gain, infertility and reduced wound healing ability.

Heart Attack

During processing, red oil is added as an additive to some garri and this oil may increase the risk of heart attacks and heart failure. Saturated fat of the oil can obstruct blood flow to the heart.

Conclusively, excessive and frequent taking of garri, especially those not well processed, can hinder one’s health and give room for ill health.

ASK YOURSELF THESE QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU EMBARK ON MARRIAGE.

Before you walk down the aisle with your partner, here are 7 sincere questions you must resolve..

7) Are we raising kids? If so, how many?

It is important that you both discuss and come to an agreement on the number of kids you plan to have. It is also important that you agree on the spacing you'll give to the children. Do you plan to have 3 kids and have a spacing of 2 years between each?

6) Are there changes we are to make to our lives?

Do not get married without properly discussing changes you both plan to make. Is any supposed to change jobs, are you planning on changing apartments? It is important that whatever changes you believe should happen during marriage should be openly discussed.

5) Is there any major secret i should know about?

Secrets in mariages are like little foxes that destroy the vineyard. Be as open as possible about your previous relationship, mistakes and matters you have kept hidden. If the partner loves you, they'll forgive you and help you move on. Remember, people might not be able to handle the truth, but they deserve to know the truth.

4) What is your love language?

Knowing your partner's love language will help you understand how best to deal with matters that concerns them. It is important that you know what love language best suits your partner. It will help you enjoy your home

3) What are the homes rules?

Are guests allowed? How long are guests allowed? Are family members allowed to come live with us? It is advised that home rules are set to ensure there is no misunderstanding when you eventually get married.

2) What religion are we adopting and what religious centre are we agreeing on?

Decide if you both will manage your homes the Christian or Muslim way. If you worship in different religious centres, agree on which the family would be attending. This should be discussed before marriage.

1) How do we handle our finances?

Money can be a major issue in a marriage if not properly handled. It is important that you both discuss how the running of the home would be. Who pays the bills? Who buys foodstuffs? Who pays for repairs? It is also important that you agree on if you'll maintain a joint or single account.
